UN CONTO DE ALENTO

Todo na tarde dourada

Todo na tarde dourada;
Completamente relaxados deslizámonos;
por ambos os nosos remos, con pouca habilidade,
Por pequenos brazos están manexados,
Mentres que as pequenas mans fan va a pretensión
de guiar os nosos paseos.
Ah, cruel Tres! Nesa hora,
Baixo tal clima soñador,
Para rogar por un conto de alento demasiado débil
Para axitar a pluma máis pequena!
Con todo, que pode unha pobre voz valer
contra tres linguas xuntas?
A Imperiosa Prima pestanexa progresivamente
o seu edicto para «empezalo» –
En tons máis suaves Secunda espera que
«Non haberá bobadas en iso» –
Mentres Tertia interrompe o conto
Non máis dunha vez por minuto.
Anon, de súpeto o silencio gañou,
Na fantasía eles perseguen
O soño infantil movéndose a través dunha terra
De marabillas salvaxes e novas,
En charla amigable co paxaro ou besta —
E a metade cre que é certo.
E algunha vez, como a historia consumiu
os pozos da fantasía en seco,
E esforzouse debilmente nun esgotado
para suxeitalo,
«A próxima vez o resto» – «É a próxima vez!»
As voces felices choran.
Así se desenvolveu a historia das marabillas:
Así lentamente, un por un,
Os seus eventos pintorescos foron elaborados–
E agora a historia está rematada,
E dirixímonos a casa, un equipo alegre,
Baixo o sol poñente.
Alice! unha historia infantil toma,
E cunha man suave
Pona onde os soños da nenez estean tortos
Na banda mística da Memoria,
Como a grilanda de flores murchas do peregrino
arrincados nunha terra afastada.

All In The Golden Afternoon

All in the golden afternoon
Full leisurely we glide;
For both our oars, with little skill,
By little arms are plied,
While little hands make vain pretense
Our wanderings to guide.
Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour,
Beneath such dreamy weather,
To beg a tale of breath too weak
To stir the tiniest feather!
Yet what can one poor voice avail
Against three tongues together?
Imperious Prima flashes forth
Her edict to «begin it»–
In gentler tones Secunda hopes
«There will be nonsense in it»–
While Tertia interrupts the tale
Not more than once a minute.
Anon, to sudden silence won,
In fancy they pursue
The dream-child moving through a land
Of wonders wild and new,
In friendly chat with bird or beast–
And half believe it true.
And ever, as the story drained
The wells of fancy dry,
And faintly strove that weary one
To put the subject by,
«The rest next time»–«It is next time!»
The happy voices cry.
Thus grew the tale of Wonderland:
Thus slowly, one by one,
Its quaint events were hammered out–
And now the tale is done,
And home we steer, a merry crew,
Beneath the setting sun.
Alice! a childish story take,
And with a gentle hand
Lay it where Childhood’s dreams are twined
In Memory’s mystic band,
Like pilgrim’s withered wreath of flowers
Plucked in a far-off land.
